The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF)

Press Release On the Opening of the Abd-Al-Rahman(Kushayb)Trial

Dr. Elhadi Idriss Yahya
Chairman of SRF
5th April 2022

The Sudan Revolutionary Front is encouraged by the opening of the case The Prosecutor v. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman (“Ali Kushayb”) on 5 April 2022 before the International Criminal Court. The SRF welcomes this vital step toward achieving justice for the people of Darfur.

The people of Darfur have suffered from decades of conflict, oppression, and marginalization, and the SRF stresses the need for continued progress and further steps to ensure accountability and end the cycle of impunity in Sudan, including the full implementation of the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan (JPA), the signing of which has brought Sudan substantially closer to realizing all three goals of the December Revolution.

The JPA addresses a comprehensive range of issues to ensure the realization of accountability in Darfur and Sudan, however, there must be progress in undertaking critical implementation activities, including the handover of the remaining indictees to the ICC; formation of key transitional justice institutions such as the Darfur Special Court to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian law; the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC); as well as the Compensation and Reparations Fund, among other transitional justice mechanisms.

Additionally, the intense increase in violence across Darfur necessitates the essential comprehensive implementation of security arrangements and security sector reform.

The SRF continues to be committed to the prioritization of peace and justice that includes all actors and stakeholders in the Sudanese society and that is part of a genuine, inclusive, and comprehensive transition that is representative of all Sudan.

It is critical that all local, regional, and international actors work together to provide the necessary support to ensure successful implementation, civilian protection, and the creation of a conducive environment for just and comprehensive peace in Darfur and Sudan.
