Statement by the IGAD Executive Secretary on the First Anniversary of the Sudan Conflict

April 14, 2024 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the protracted conflict in the Republic of Sudan, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, implores all belligerent parties to immediately halt hostilities, and prioritise the pursuit of a negotiated political settlement. Dr. Workneh underscores the imperative to redouble efforts in addressing the dire humanitarian situation and pervasive human suffering, recognising the consequential ramifications of the conflict on the stability of Sudan and the broader region.

“The enduring conflict spanning over 12 months has inflicted untold suffering upon millions of Sudanese citizens, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis,” said Dr. Workneh

The Executive Secretary urges all stakeholders to work closely with IGAD and its designated Special Envoy, to work towards actively securing a nationwide cessation of hostilities and a sustainable ceasefire, and implementing humanitarian measures to help alleviate human suffering. The Executive Secretary underscores the imperative of initiating an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process affirming that a political settlement stands as the sole viable channel to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the Sudan conflict.

IGAD affirms its unwavering commitment to collaborating with AU, Neigbouring countries and our pertinent Sudanese stakeholders in pursuit of enduring peace and stability.
