Militia Conducts Systematic Ethnic Cleansing Campaign in Nyala

The Office of the Humanitarian Aid Coordinator of the Darfur Regional Government revealed in a statement on Sunday that the Rapid Support Forces militia conducted a systematic ethnic cleansing campaign against unarmed civilians in Nyala on Saturday evening, leading to the forced disappearance of individuals from certain groups in the city.

The coordination office considered the actions of the militia a serious step, a blatant violation, and a challenge to human rights and international law. It called on the international community to take responsible steps in accordance with its commitments to ensure accountability of the perpetrators and provide protection and support to the victims and their families in the Darfur region.

The statement reads as follows:

Important Statement**

On the night of June 16, in Nyala, the Rapid Support Forces conducted a serious and systematic ethnic cleansing campaign against unarmed civilians, leading to the forced disappearance of individuals from certain groups in the city. This behavior is a blatant violation and challenge to human rights and international law. The targeting of specific social and age groups, such as youth, men, and innocent children in Nyala, are horrific actions with devastating consequences for the country’s security and stability, necessitating urgent measures to protect civilians.

This violation contradicts UN Security Council Resolution 2736, which demanded the Rapid Support Forces cease their continuous attacks on civilians and lift the siege imposed on Al-Fashir since May 10, 2024, aimed at taking control of the city.

We strongly condemn the actions of these militias and call for an immediate end to the violence against civilians in Nyala and other Darfur cities where the Rapid Support Forces are present. We urge the international community to take responsible steps in accordance with its commitments to ensure accountability of the perpetrators and provide protection and support to the victims and their families in the Darfur region.

We also appeal to national and international human rights organizations to focus on the violations and acts of violence and murder occurring daily against unarmed civilians and provide the necessary evidence to prosecute the perpetrators.

Civilians, including youth, children, women, and men, have the right to live a life free from fear and violence. The deliberate and random killing and targeting of civilians is a betrayal of humanity and must stop.

We warn all leaders of the Rapid Support Forces militias involved in the conflict of the consequences of their crimes and urge them to respect international law and take all necessary measures to protect civilians and prevent further violence.

Our hearts are with the victims and their families, and we call for justice, peace, and an end to the suffering in Darfur.”
