STATEMENT ON THE WAD AL-NOORA MASSACRE

Bujumbura, 6th June 2024: The Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) strongly condemns the heinous attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the village of Wad Al- Noora in Al-Jazira state on 5th June 2024. This senseless act of violence resulted in the tragic loss of more than 180 civilian lives, leaving the people of Sudan in profound sorrow and pain.

The ICGLR is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in Sudan and the disregard for human life demonstrated by this attack. The targeting of civilians is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians and cease hostilities immediately. The ongoing violence only serves to exacerbate the suffering of the Sudanese people, who have already endured years of conflict and hardship. It is imperative that all sides engage in meaningful dialogue to establish a lasting peace and work towards a sustainable solution to the underlying issues fuelling the conflict.

The ICGLR extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stands in unwavering solidarity with the people of Sudan during this challenging period. The loss of life and the trauma inflicted upon the survivors of this attack are immeasurable. We recognize the resilience and strength of the Sudanese people in the face of adversity and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them in their pursuit of peace, justice, and stability.

The ICGLR remains committed to working with regional and international partners to support the Sudanese people in their quest for a brighter future where peace, security, and prosperity prevail.
