Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid bin Abdul Karim Al-Khuraiji arrived on a visit that lasted for hours, during which he met with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and then returned to his country.
This is the first visit by a Saudi official since the outbreak of war after the rebellion of the Rapid Support militias, as Al-Khuraiji’s trip to Port Sudan was the subject of great media interest in that it comes in light of developments in the security and political scene in the country.
Jeddah platform resume
Immediately upon his arrival, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, met with the Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, and the Director General of the General Intelligence Service, Lieutenant General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, stated in press statements, according to the Transitional Sovereignty Council media, that the Deputy Foreign Minister’s meeting with the Sudanese leadership reviewed ways to resume the Jeddah Platform, noting that the President of the Sovereignty Council affirmed Sudan’s keenness to make the Jeddah Platform a success as it is a foundation upon which to build, with an emphasis on The necessity of implementing what was agreed upon in May 2023.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister conveyed to the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council the greetings of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and his Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, indicating that the Saudi guest affirmed during the meeting the keenness of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the security and stability of Sudan and its unlimited support for it, considering that stability Sudan has a direct impact on the security and stability of the region, pointing to the huge resources that Sudan has in various fields.
The President of the Sovereignty Council expressed his thanks and appreciation for the positions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of the security and stability of Sudan, pointing to the fraternal relations that bind the two brotherly peoples.
Regional files
For his part, the expert and political analyst, Ambassador Al-Obaid Al-Marwah, believes that the visit demonstrates the Kingdom’s increasing interest in the Sudanese file, especially after it became possible that the file would move away from Jeddah in light of the talk about expanding the facilitators in the Jeddah platform and Western interventions through the African Union and the IGAD organization.
Al-Marwah adds that the Kingdom is closely monitoring these developments, and despite its preoccupation with other regional and international files, it has, in my estimation, decided to maintain its active role in the Sudanese crisis. My interlocutor points out that the Saudi official’s visit carried messages not only from Riyadh, but also from its regional and international allies, and it is the culmination of previous unannounced contacts between the leadership in Saudi Arabia and the Sudanese leadership.
Three files
But journalist and political analyst Osama Abdel Majid has a different opinion. He says that the relations between Khartoum and Riyadh are always based and carry within them a security nature. They are also based on three files, the first is the security of the Red Sea, and the second is the Houthi file, given that Sudan has old relations with Yemen that go beyond… Relations with all the countries of the region are characterized by a great deal of warmth, especially since the educational missions focused on the Sudanese. As for the third file, it is “Decisive Storm,” where Sudan did not hesitate to support the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia militarily and send thousands of its soldiers to Saudi Arabia, then provide political and diplomatic support for a position Kingdom, while President Al-Bashir personally took over the file.
At the end of the year 2020, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan had visited Khartoum as the highest-ranking Saudi official to visit Sudan after the departure of the rescue regime. Behind the scenes of that visit, Prince Faisal had discussed the file of the grouping of countries riparian to the Red Sea.
