Sovereign Council President Meets British Delegation

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, met today in Port Sudan with a high-level British delegation led by Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the UK’s Senior Military Adviser to the Middle East and North Africa. The delegation included the UK Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Richard Crowder, and the British Military Attaché to Cairo.

The meeting addressed the overall developments in Sudan, efforts to achieve peace and stability, and a review of bilateral relations and prospects for strengthening them to serve mutual interests.

In a press statement following the meeting, Special Envoy Richard Crowder reaffirmed the commitment of the UK government and people to stand with the Sudanese people. He emphasized that the UK is leveraging its resources to support Sudan in achieving security, restoring basic services, and driving development and recovery, expressing deep regret over the suffering and tragedy caused by the ongoing war.

“We held important talks with the President of the Sovereign Council regarding the urgent need for a ceasefire,” Crowder stated. “We expressed our profound shock at the situation emerging in El Fasher, which has revealed widespread brutality and mass killings. We also discussed the obligation of all parties to protect civilians in accordance with the Jeddah Declaration.”

The Envoy praised the deep-rooted historical ties between the two nations in education, culture, and economic development, noting the significant contributions of the Sudanese diaspora to British national life.

Crowder underscored the necessity of concerted international efforts, led by the United States and international partners, to end the conflict, provide humanitarian aid, and stop the atrocities witnessed in El Fasher. He noted that the United Kingdom will assume the presidency of the UN Security Council next month and will co-host a conference with Germany in Berlin this April to support Sudan.

The British Envoy concluded by affirming London’s commitment to close coordination with partners in the U.S., Norway, the UN, the EU, and the African Union to ensure lasting peace and stability in Sudan.
