Khartoum – May 26, 2022 — at the Republican Palace today, a joint meeting, which included the Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant-General Muhammad Hamdan Daglo* and members of the Council, Lieutenant-General Shams Al-Din Kabbashi, Lieutenant-General Bahri Ibrahim Jaber Ibrahim, and the tripartite mechanism The Facilitator of the Sudanese Dialogue, represented by Mr. Volker Peters, Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Sudan, Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission to Assist the Transition in Sudan (UNITAMS), African Union Envoy Dr. Mohamed El-Hassan Ould Labat, IGAD Envoy Ismail Uwais and African Union Representative in Khartoum, Ambassador Mohamed Belish.
The meeting deliberated on the offer made by the tripartite mechanism consisting of the United Nations, the African Union, and the IGAD, regarding its approach to the dialogue process that it is facilitating, between the Sudanese parties and factions to reach a consensus to manage the transitional period.
In a press statement after the meeting, Sovereign Council member Lieutenant-General Bahri Ibrahim Jaber affirmed their full support for the efforts made by the tripartite mechanism to make the dialogue between the Sudanese parties a success and facilitate its mission.
His Excellency said that the meeting that took place today, in the office of the Vice President of the Sovereignty Council, with the delegation of the tripartite mechanism, comes within the ongoing consultation process between the two sides, and within the framework of the process of facilitating the Sudanese dialogue, to reach an agreement to manage the transitional period. He added that the meeting dealt with the necessity of accelerating the start of direct dialogue and emptying it within a specified period.
In addition, the African Union envoy, Dr. Mohamed El-Hassan Ould Labat, explained that the mechanism confirmed during the meeting its readiness to expedite the political process, and presented a detailed vision of its approach to the Sudanese political dialogue process, in which it plays the role of facilitator.
And Aban Ould Labbat, said that the mechanism held an open and constructive dialogue with the members of the Sovereignty Council, during which it confirmed its readiness to accelerate the political process, and that it urged the responsible authorities to take encouraging measures to hold the dialogue, especially the release of the remaining political detainees, especially employees of the youth resistance committees. Ould Libatt expressed their satisfaction with the mechanism for the responses they received and the conclusions of the meeting.
