His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs presents Sudan’s statement during the Global Refugee Forum

His Excellency Ambassador Ali al-Sadiq Ali, Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Sudanese delegation participating in the Global Refugee Forum held in Geneva from December 13 to 15. The delegation also included Mr. Moussa Ateron, the Refugees Commissioner, and a representative of the initiative “IGAD for Sustainable Solutions to Displacement” in the Republic of Sudan and South Sudan.

At the forum’s opening session on Wednesday, December 13, His Excellency the Minister addressed the high-level gathering. He emphasized that Sudan is currently experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis resulting from the war waged by the Janjaweed militia on Sudan and its people. Over the past eight months, the rebel militia systematically destroyed the country’s strategic and service facilities, committing heinous crimes and violations against the Sudanese people, including killing, terrorizing, looting, rape, and forced displacement. This has led to millions being internally displaced, with over a million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

In this regard, His Excellency expressed Sudan’s gratitude to neighboring countries for hosting those fleeing the horrors of war. He affirmed that the militia meets all criteria for classification as a terrorist group. The Minister also reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to finding comprehensive solutions to forced displacement, encouraging voluntary returns, addressing livelihood opportunities for refugees and host communities alike, and incorporating environmental and climate issues into the solutions, emphasizing the importance of registration and protection systems.

The Minister urged the international community and donors to fulfill their commitments to implement the High Commissioner for Refugees’ plan to respond to the humanitarian situations in Sudan and its neighboring countries. He called for urgent humanitarian support and medium- to long-term developmental assistance to improve the infrastructure of host communities suffering from severe shortages in all essential needs and services.
