Port Sudan, 8th April 2024

The Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, commended the role of churches in promoting values of coexistence and peace in Sudan.

This came during his meeting today at his office with a delegation from the Sudanese Council of Churches, headed by Bishop Ezekiel Kando, the Archbishop of the Sudanese Episcopal Church and the Bishop of Khartoum.

Bishop Ezekiel Kando said in a press statement that the meeting addressed issues of peace in Sudan, especially since it has suffered greatly from the ravages of wars, praising the significant role of the armed forces in achieving peace and stability in Sudan.

On his part, Bishop Serapion, Bishop of Atbara, Omdurman, and Northern Sudan for the Coptic Orthodox, noted during the meeting that they sensed the Head of the Sovereignty Council’s peaceful approach towards achieving peace, expressing hope that security and peace would prevail throughout Sudan. He stated that Sudan has always been known as a country of security, peace, and tranquility.

Meanwhile, Reverend Az-Zain Al-Tayeb Ali, Chairman of the Sudanese Council of Churches, mentioned that the meeting addressed issues of justice and peace, reaffirming the council’s support for anything that would solidify the values of peace and peaceful coexistence in society. He also pointed out that the meeting also addressed the violations suffered by churches during the past period, and the looting operations carried out against them by the rebellious terrorist Rapid Support Forces militia, affirming that the violations committed by the militias against the churches do not resemble the values, traditions, and heritage of the Sudanese people.
