Destruction of Kenyan Legacy by William Ruto
By : Dr. OMAR A. MANNAN
Despite the great legacy laid by former Kenyan leaders, especially Jomo Kenyatta, and the historic role of Kenya in Pan-African affairs, Kenya’s current trajectory is alarming. The country seems to be abandoning its Pan-African roots and instead embracing a path that labels it as an imperialistic puppet of Western colonization.
This new trend is evident in the current Kenyan President William Ruto’s attitudes towards sister African nations, particularly Sudan. His recent reception of Mohammad Hamdan Hemedti, a man sanctioned by America and implicated in creating the biggest humanitarian crisis in Africa, raises serious concerns. Hemedti’s forces have been accused of committing heinous crimes, including racial cleansing, mass murder, rape, and crimes against humanity, as documented by credible international media and organizations, including the United Nations.
Furthermore, Ruto’s hosting of an opposition political group with the objective of establishing a parallel government in Sudan is a move that contravenes the UN charter and the African Union charter. Such actions serve no advantage to Kenya but rather cater to the interests of foreign countries seeking to colonize Africa and exploit its resources.
These actions have resulted in Kenya failing to achieve its goals in the African Union (AU). A clear manifestation of this is the failure of Uhuru Kenyatta to secure the chairmanship of the African Union, losing to a more respected candidate from Djibouti.
Kenya’s inability to secure key positions within the AU, such as the Chairpersonshiphave limited its influence within the organization, and this might be beneficial for Africa in the long run.
It is essential for Kenya to reassess its priorities and recommit to its Pan-African roots to regain its influence and respect within the African Union and the continent at large.
