The poverty alleviation and agricultural sector support project in Sudan’s Red Sea state

The poverty alleviation and agricultural sector support project in Sudan’s Red Sea state, funded by the China Fund for global development and South-South cooperation and implemented by the food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has officially started, providing important assistance to the livelihoods of tens of thousands of local farmers, herders and fishermen.

This project focuses on people’s livelihoods and provides emergency assistance such as seeds, agricultural machinery and fishing equipment to farmers, herders, small and medium fishermen affected by the conflict. The project will directly benefit more than 8,000 families, helping solve the problem of food and clothing for more than 40 thousand people. At the same time, more than 360 thousand farmers, shepherds and fishermen are expected to indirectly benefit from public welfare activities such as animal epidemic prevention and Watershed Management.
This project innovatively introduced China’s mature agricultural technology system, focusing on making breakthroughs in three key areas: first, providing high-quality vegetable seeds and disseminating drought-resistant vegetable cultivation and management technologies; secondly, establishing an animal disease prevention and control network to reduce livestock mortality; and thirdly, applying effective water collection technology to alleviate water shortages.
Committed to the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the FAO office in Sudan has designed a gender equality unit and plans to provide targeted training to 1,000 women in managing fish cooperatives, making fishing nets, processing fish, cooking and marketing.
The charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Sudan, Zhang Xianghua, said that while Sudan is going through a difficult period, the project is still progressing steadily. This is not only a reflection of the flexibility of cooperation between the two countries, but also a testament to the sincere friendship between China and Sudan, who have shared good times and bad.
The China Fund for global development and South-South cooperation is a special fund established by the Chinese government to support sustainable development in other developing countries and promote the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
