Old Man Musing: The Butcher of Al Fasher-A Case for International Justice

The arrest of RSF commander Al Fateh Abdullah Idris , known as Abu Lulu, reopens the question of international justice in Sudan: will the world act when faced with evidence of atrocity, or let impunity prevail once more?

By Hassan Gibril (Former AMIS & UNAMID Peacekeeper in Darfur)

The arrest of Al Fateh Abdullah Idris, commonly known as Abu Lulu, a field commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marks a significant development in the conflict in Sudan. Abu Lulu is accused of human rights violations in El Fasher, and his arrest raises questions about accountability and justice.

Under international law, individuals responsible for war crimes and human rights abuses must be held accountable. The principle of universal jurisdiction allows states to prosecute individuals for international crimes, regardless of where they were committed. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has jurisdiction over war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed in Sudan.

Suppose the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) or the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) or any other legitimate Sudanese government fails to investigate and prosecute Abu Lulu. In that case, the ICC may therefore consider intervening.

The international community has a responsibility to ensure that those responsible for atrocities are held accountable. This requires supporting national and international efforts to investigate and prosecute crimes and providing assistance to victims.

Accountability is key to preventing future atrocities and promoting justice and reconciliation. The case of Abu Lulu serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding international law and ensuring that those responsible for human rights abuses are held accountable.
