Mining Diplomacy on the Regional Stage
Sudan’s mining regulator spearheads a dynamic campaign of high-level diplomacy, investor engagement, and technical dialogue, showcasing its effectiveness during its strategic participation at the 4th Egypt Mining Forum.
For the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company Ltd. (SMRC), the forum was not simply a presence—it was a declaration of intent: to position Sudan as a credible, investment-ready hub in the evolving global mining landscape.
Sudan’s Strategic Visibility and Investment Pitch
With a dedicated pavilion and a robust program of side meetings, SMRC presented Sudan’s vast mineral endowment, policy reforms, and transparent regulatory framework to an international audience. The company’s message was clear: Sudan is open for responsible, long-term investment—anchored in governance, opportunity, and strategic alignment.
SMRC Director General Mohamed Tahir Omer, speaking on the forum’s opening day, called it “a vital platform where ideas become agreements, and potential becomes partnership.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and investor confidence in Sudan’s path forward.
H.E. Eng. Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, formally inaugurated the forum, setting a forward-looking tone that emphasized regional cooperation, digital transformation, and environmental responsibility.

Strategic Alliances: SMRC Initiates Sudan–Saudi Dialogue on Mining Synergies
On the sidelines of the forum, SMRC initiated a high-level bilateral meeting with the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS). Director General Omer met with Eng. Abdullah bin Mufter Al-Shamrani, SGS President, to discuss avenues for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives—especially around the Arabian–Nubian Shield, a shared geological formation rich in strategic minerals.

Mr. Omer emphasized Sudan’s commitment to developing institutional linkages, training partnerships, and data integration mechanisms with Saudi Arabia. In return, Eng. Al-Shamrani described the engagement as “a shared vision to convert subsurface knowledge into regional prosperity.“
The meeting marked a turning point in Sudan–Saudi mining relations, laying the groundwork for structured, multi-year cooperation.
Technical Leadership and Market Positioning: SMRC Takes the Lead
In addition to its diplomatic engagements, SMRC (Sudanese Mineral Resources Company Ltd.) played a central role in technical dialogue sessions with exploration companies, financial institutions, and development partners. These discussions focused on key areas shaping Sudan’s mining trajectory, including:
- Sudan’s evolving mining legislation and licensing regime.
- New incentive models for large-scale exploration and downstream processing.
- Integration of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks.
- Formalization of ASM (Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining) practices.
- Emerging opportunities in battery minerals and other critical raw materials.
In a featured session, SMRC Director General Mohamed Tahir Omer delivered a technical paper outlining Sudan’s rising gold production, its growing contribution to GDP (Gross Domestic Product), and the company’s forward priorities in infrastructure, governance, and sector diversification.
From Periphery to Powerhouse: Redefining Sudan’s Role
More than showcasing geology, SMRC’s engagement reflected a strategic rebranding of Sudan’s mining sector—from a resource-rich outlier to a regional anchor for sustainable mineral development.
The company’s forward-leaning stance—built on policy reform, data transparency, and regional integration—earned recognition from both public and private sector stakeholders. This recognition positions Sudan as a key player in the global mining landscape. The message was received: Sudan is not merely a site of extraction, but a partner in economic transformation.
As one delegate put it: “The world is starting to look at Sudan not just for what lies beneath, but for how it’s choosing to manage it.”
A Message of Thanks and a Look Ahead
SMRC extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of Egypt, the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA), and the organizers of the 4th Egypt Mining Forum for delivering a world-class platform for strategic dialogue and regional cooperation. The company also recognizes the invaluable contributions of its technical experts, media team, and bilateral partners, who ensured a unified and impactful representation of Sudan’s mining sector throughout the event.

As Sudan prepares to host Sudan Mining Week in October 2025, SMRC stands at the forefront of a sector it envisions not merely as a source of national revenue but as a foundation for resilience, innovation, job creation, and long-term shared value. With continued reform, regional engagement, and investor confidence, Sudan’s mineral future is no longer a prospect—it is a position.
