By Xu Jian, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Sudan

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, we wish to pay high tribute to all heroes and patriots who dedicated their lives to peace and justice, and their historic contributions will live on forever in our hearts. Over the past eight decades, the Chinese people have emerged from the miseries of war despite trials and tribulations, achieving the incredible transformation from standing up and growing prosperous to becoming strong. Bearing in mind and reflecting on the past, we must draw strength from the Chinese people’s deep love for their country, and work with people from all nations to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
The Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was fought from September 1931. In the ensuing 14 years, the Chinese people forged the great spirit of resisting aggression that features unbending will and mutual assistance. They have demonstrated to the world a kind of patriotic sentiment that compels people to share responsibility for the fate of the nation; a sense of national integrity that empowers people to look death in the face and never yield; a heroic mettle that instills people with the courage to fight to the bitter end; and an unyielding and indomitable belief in victory. For its part, Sudan was also an important battlefield in the world’s fight against fascism. It contributed a significant share to the final victory of the World Anti-Fascist War as well.
Following the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, the United Nations came into being, entrusted by the international community with the historic mission of maintaining international peace and security and promoting cooperation and development among nations. Since its inception 80 years ago, the UN has steadily grown and evolved into a vital platform for coordinating international relations and resolving conflicts. It has made remarkable achievements in global poverty reduction, health, education, and human rights. It has also provided developing countries with a platform to engage in global governance on an equal footing.
We need to remember history and cherish peace. The Global Security Initiative proposed by China in 2022, which calls for a standard, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, gives a new impetus to global security. China remains committed to genuine multilateralism, upholding and defending the authority of the UN, and firmly upholding the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has been playing an essential role in global security. China has actively participated in and led multiple UN peacekeeping operations by sending over 50,000 peacekeepers to more than 20 countries and regions, including Sudan.
China firmly supports Sudan in its efforts to realize peace and stability, as it knows the value of peace. In September 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping said when he met with the President of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, in Beijing, that China supports Sudan in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity and hopes Sudan will restore peace and stability at an early date to bring the country back to the track of development. China will continue to uphold justice for Sudan at the UN and other multilateral settings and strive for a favorable external environment for the political settlement of the Sudanese issue. As a strategic partner of Sudan, China actively supports Sudan in advancing its path of peaceful development. It will assist Sudan in rebuilding infrastructure to improve the capacity of the country’s public services, and provide assistance and investment in key areas, including agriculture, food security, water conservancy, electricity, and telecommunications, to help Sudan restore stability and development.
We need to take history as a mirror to open up a brighter future. We must defend the fruits of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and work hard to turn them into a strong impetus for world peace and development. While exploring the development path suited to its national conditions, China will strive to offer greater Chinese wisdom and strength for bolstering world peace and prosperity. China will continue to work with Sudan and other countries around the world to advance further the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
