US-Saudi Announcement: 7-Day Ceasefire in Sudan Starting Monday
Khartoum, May 21, 2023 –

The United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced in a joint statement on Saturday that representatives of the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces have agreed to a week-long ceasefire starting on Monday.
The statement stated that Washington and Riyadh declare the signing of the ceasefire by representatives of the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces, and their commitment not to seek any territorial gains during the 48 hours preceding the commencement of the humanitarian ceasefire.
The statement mentioned that the ceasefire “can be extended with the consent of both parties” who have also agreed to “facilitate the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid, restore essential services, and withdraw forces from hospitals and vital public facilities.”
The fighting between the two sides has led to a collapse in law and order, rapidly depleting food supplies, money, and basic necessities. Collective looting of banks, embassies, factories, and aid warehouses has occurred.
The agreement aims to facilitate the access of warring parties to humanitarian aid, restore services, and withdraw from hospitals and public facilities. The ceasefire will come into effect on Monday at 09:45 PM local time.
