Baidoa, Somalia, April 6, 2026Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remains in Baidoa, the administrative capital of Southwest State, as political developments continue to unfold in the region.

During his stay, the president has held a series of meetings with traditional elders, community leaders, and various segments of society, including women’s groups. The discussions have focused on the upcoming process to elect a new leader for Southwest State, following the recent political transition in the region.According to officials, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is advocating for the implementation of a one-person, one-vote electoral system in Southwest State. The same model is also being promoted for other federal member states considered aligned with the federal government, including Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Waqooyi Bari (Northeast regions).

The proposed electoral approach represents a significant shift from the indirect voting system traditionally used in Somalia’s regional elections. However, it remains a subject of political debate.Notably, Puntland and Jubaland administrations have expressed opposition to the president’s electoral policies, highlighting ongoing divisions over the future direction of Somalia’s electoral framework. The situation in Baidoa and across the federal member states remains dynamic, as consultations continue and political stakeholders negotiate the structure and timeline of upcoming regional elections.
