Garowe, 24 May 2025 — Former Puntland presidential candidate Guled Salah Barre made a high-profile return to Garowe after spending several months abroad. Greeted by a large crowd of supporters, Barre held a press conference where he delivered strong accusations against President Said Abdullahi Deni.

Barre, who ran against Deni in the Puntland presidential election on 8 January 2024, alleged that the president has been involved in covert operations that undermine Puntland’s sovereignty. He accused President Deni of allowing foreign mercenaries into the region and assisting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in using Bosaso Airport to support military operations in Sudan, including supplying weapons and personnel to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In addition, Barre claimed that President Deni, in collaboration with the UAE, has facilitated private companies to exploit Puntland’s mineral resources without transparency or consultation with the regional cabinet, parliament, or the public.

These serious allegations are likely to spark political tension in Puntland, as observers watch closely for any official response from the Deni administration or the UAE.
