An Iranian Lesson in Negotiation Management

Interim results after a month of war

In observing the ongoing Iranian-American negotiations, a crucial lesson in negotiation management emerges:

– One of the most dangerous strategic mistakes is being drawn into the agenda proposed by the mediator and accepting their intellectual and political framework. This narrows your options and reduces your room for maneuver.

– When an adversary imposes their own agenda and tools, they have already taken a significant step towards achieving their vision.

– Conversely, numerous practices, including the Iranian experience—even in its early stages—demonstrate that a true actor does not merely respond to proposals but presents their own “roadmap,” clearly defining priorities, objectives, and political boundaries. This shifts the course of negotiations from a reactive to a proactive and influential stance.

– The essence of serious—and sovereign, so to speak—negotiations is not about improving the other party’s document, but about imposing a new formula that compels the adversary to align with or adapt to your vision.

– Therefore, managing negotiations with awareness and independence in formulating positions is a fundamental pillar for achieving results.

Iran is determined to conduct the negotiations. Based on its own terms, not those of the adversary, this constitutes an achievement in itself, given the disparity in military power and capabilities between the two sides.

Note: Despite the commencement of negotiations and the two-week ceasefire agreement, the possibility of renewed war remains during this period, particularly in light of the Israeli factor in the equation in general, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in particular, who is believed to be seeking to undermine the settlement process. The first signs of this tendency appeared today in the form of the intense and unprecedented bombardment launched by the Israeli army against Lebanon, leaving hundreds of civilian casualties.
